A HYDROGEN FUTURE IS INEVITABLE

Hydrogen is recognized as the fuel of choice for future zero energy systems where direct electrification is not practical – sectors such as heavy freight (road and rail) off-road vehicles, shipping, planes, space heating in cold climates, and heavy industrials (eg. steel making). Hydrogen is projected, by the Government of Canada, to be 27% of Canada’s energy demand by 2050 (64 ktH2/day) – equal to 72% of Canada’s current gas production.

Energy Density of Hydrogen is Superior to Competitive Fuels

Hydrogen has a greater energy density than competitive fuels. Higher volumes of hydrogen create challenges for transportation and storage that are met through Caledonian Midstream’s location of the Quirk Creek Plant relative to markets and access to infrastructure.

Principles Supporting a Canadian Hydrogen Strategy

Advantages of the New Hydrogen Economy

“Blue Hydrogen”, manufactured from natural gas, an immediate opportunity for Western Canada, must be
competitively priced against alternative carbon fuels to be credible and compelling:

  • Retail Price for low or zero carbon should be $3.50 to $5.00/kg (C$25-35/GJ) for pure hydrogen transportation fuel and $1.00 to $5.00/kg ($7 to $20/GJ) for 95% hydrogen in thermochemical applications.

  • Price should depend on life cycle Greenhouse Gas (“GHG”) savings: about 83% for hydrogen fuel cell electric (“HFCE”) truck displacing diesel, 89% displacing gasoline, and 67% in displacing natural gas for heating. For diesel fuels (40% H2/60% diesel) savings are about 32%.
  • Blue hydrogen in Canada is about half the wholesale cost of diesel fuel (per GJ) and should be possible to deliver from nodes situated along strategic corridors as a competitive transportation fuel to diesel.
  • Value added benefits of managing CO2 associated with hydrogen production including the existing carbon tax credit initiatives, Alberta’s Technology Innovation and Emission Reduction (“TIER”) program and new Canadian Federal Clean Fuel Standard Hydrogen should be competitively priced as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for space heating and significantly lower than the price of diesel for heavy transport (approximately half cost of diesel).
  • Premium prices are available in some markets – fuel cell grade hydrogen in California is US$13 to US$17/kg H2 and we should be able to deliver to that market, if we choose to do so, for US$3-$$/kg H2 or less.

Natural Gas to Blue Hydrogen & Methanol – How Does It Work?

  • We start by converting natural gas to methanol (CH3OH) using a steam methane reformer (“SMR”). Methanol synthesis is a commercial process first developed in Germany in 1923, which has been commercially demonstrated around the world over many years.

  • The SMR generates syngas with excess hydrogen (H2). The excess hydrogen is available for fuel or sale.

  • The hydrogen rich steam contains CO2, which is removed, dehydrated, and sequestered (“CCUS”).

  • 99.9% purity hydrogen will be exported.
  • Our low-carbon methanol and hydrogen project will be capable of producing 300 tonnes per day of methanol 350 days per year, and will produce increasing amounts of Blue Hydrogen as the local hydrogen market develops.
